When the volunteers first picked up their crochet hooks, they had no idea that God would send their handiwork across continents to encourage a church planter in rural Kenya.
At Covenant Church (Holland, MI), a small group of women meets regularly with yarn in their hands and service on their heart. “We started this group when several ladies wanted to use their time and talents for missions or helping someone out,” says Stacy, who helps coordinate. “It’s usually only five of us, but when a big project comes up, many others may join too.” What began when someone first said, “I love to knit and crochet, but don’t have anyone who needs anything,” has grown into a ministry effort that supplies hand-crocheted lanyards for audio Bibles, among other things.
Recently, some of those lanyards traveled over 9,300 miles to East Africa, where ASM Executive Director Naomi Frizzell and Donor Ministries Director Joshua Harrison met Pastor Lawi and his wife, Frieda. Serving among nomadic people groups, the couple travels diligently to share God’s Word, nurture church plants, and all the while sustain their own family through bi-vocational gardening. As they received several hundred additional audio Bibles, they were also presented with these hand-crocheted audio Bible holders.

Their joy was immediate. “This is wonderful. We will first give these to the more elderly in our community. They will love them!” they said, envisioning the people who can soon use the lanyards to listen to God’s Word all day, wherever they go.
Today, when Pastor Lawi slips an audio Bible into a crocheted carrier, he’s not only giving God’s Word in the heart language of the nomadic people he serves, he’s also bringing a hand-crafted token of YOUR love and prayers, of every person who has helped bring God’s Word to each recipient. God can use every stitch to help someone hear and see the love of Jesus for them. Thank you for every way you are contributing to this work.
