“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12, NIV).
Traveling back from a November audio Bible distribution, we were on south India roads well after dark. When night falls in rural India, simply put, it’s dark. No corner streetlights, no flashing neon billboards, and very few lights on homes or businesses.
Our driver, Reuben, calmly navigated us around water buffalo carts without reflectors or lights, dodged unlit motorbikes driving toward us in our lane, and beeped the horn at pedestrians who seemed to appear out of nowhere, finally delivering us safely to the hotel after midnight.
This audio Bible distribution was one of three during my visit, along with ASM’s India-Asia Director, JP Sundararajan, with our national partner in India. Hundreds of people received audio Bibles, and are now hearing God’s Word in their own heart language – many of them for the first time. Thank you for helping to make this happen through your prayers and financial support.
Traveling this life without Christ, the way is dark, uncertain and often perilous. Yet into this darkness, the Light of the World is shining. Through your prayers and financial support, ASM, and its national partners, are spreading this Light in urban areas and rural villages in India, Mozambique, Mexico, and around the world.
The Christmas Eve gathering at my church is one of my favorite services. The hope of the Christmas message, the reminder of why Christ came, the children with animated anticipation of the next morning. The service ends with lighting candles. Maybe your church does the same? As we sing “Silent Night” softly, the lights dim, and starting at the outer edges of the sanctuary, we each receive the light and pass it on to the person next to us. Slowly, the once-dark room becomes bright with a moving reminder of the urgent need to shine God’s Light into the darkness of the world around us.
Millions of people still need to hear about the Light of the World. Yet, “How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?” (Romans 10:14).
Would you prayerfully consider a year-end gift to help ASM reach its $100,000 goal for purchasing audio Bibles? These audio Bibles will share the Light of Christ with people who desperately need to hear the Good News. The woman with leprosy in India, the farmer in Mozambique, the day laborer in Mexico, the victim of sex trafficking in China, the child of a factory worker in Cambodia – all need to hear God’s Word.
Just like the shepherds couldn’t contain their joy and astonishment with what they had seen and heard, this season let’s rediscover that joy and wonder of sharing God’s Light. We can’t keep this Good News silent. We can’t keep this Light hidden.
